What lies beneath the laws?

And why does love keep appearing in the language we use to understand the cosmos?

Love of the Cosmos

Love of the Cosmos

We say the universe
obeys laws.

But what is a law of nature?

  • A rule
    reality follows?
  • A pattern
    we discovered?
  • A description of
    something deeper?

In the laboratory a law is a description that keeps its appointments. Within a stated range, it says what will happen closely enough to test. Whether that description is also what the world is: physics can work with the first sentence and leave the second standing.

On the word law

The distinction between a law as a human description and a law as a proposed feature of reality is a philosophical one. This room does not settle it. See the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, “Laws of Nature,” revised November 16, 2020.

02

Four

The working map of fundamental physics names four interactions. They are not four stickers of equal size. Their reach is different, and one of them is missing from the theory that handles the other three.

Four forces. Or four appearances inside a deeper architecture.

Standard Model, and what it leaves out

CERN’s public account of the Standard Model describes the electromagnetic, weak, and strong interactions, and says gravitation is not part of that theory. The bars beside this text are a drawing of reach, not a measured plot. Particle properties used across the field are collected by the Particle Data Group.

03

What holds this together?

What holds this together?

  1. QuarkStrongGluons bind color.
  2. ProtonStrongA bound state, not a pile of parts.
  3. AtomElectromagnetismCharges arrange the shell.
  4. StoneElectromagnetismThe solidity in a hand.
  5. StarGravityMass gathers mass.
  6. WebGravity, and a questionStructures hold while space expands.

The answer changes with the scale. At the smallest of these stations the carrier associated with the strong interaction is the gluon. There are eight, in the theory. They carry the charge they mediate, so they act on one another. That is part of why a quark is not found walking around by itself.

Eight gluons

The count of eight gluons, and the statement that they carry the charge they mediate, is the account in quantum chromodynamics as tabulated by the Particle Data Group. The spine of objects above is a drawing of scale, not a measurement.

What looks separate

Electromagnetic

Weak

Electroweak

Ordinary energy

Higher energy. Earlier conditions.

They look separate.

At the energies of ordinary matter, electromagnetism is carried by a massless photon and has no cutoff. It does reach across a nucleus. The repulsion between protons is that force.

Far smaller than a nucleus.

The weak interaction is carried by the heavy W and Z bosons, and its range is that short.

The electroweak theory treats them as one interaction, seen as two after a symmetry is hidden. The W and the Z were found at CERN in 1983.

How far down
does the unity go?

Symmetry, here, is not a pleasing balance. It is a change you can make that leaves the law the same.

When a symmetry is hidden, the world can look more complicated than the description that produces it. The unity is not a drawing. The drawing is only the shape of the claim.

Electroweak theory, and the bosons

The Nobel Prize in Physics for 1979 went to Sheldon Glashow, Abdus Salam, and Steven Weinberg for the unified theory of the weak and electromagnetic interaction. In 1983 the UA1 and UA2 experiments at CERN reported the W and Z. Carlo Rubbia and Simon van der Meer received the 1984 prize for that work. The figure above is a drawing of that claim, not a trace from the detector.

Gluon

The sum is not a measurement from a detector.

The dark

Dark matter

The name is for mass inferred from motion and from the bending of light, when the matter that shines is not enough. In the Bullet Cluster, reported by Clowe and colleagues in 2006, two clusters passed through one another. The hot gas, which can collide, lagged. The mass that lenses background galaxies did not lag with it. Whatever most of that mass is, it did not behave like the gas. No particle has been identified.

Dark energy

Distant supernovae, reported in 1998 by teams led by Saul Perlmutter and by Brian Schmidt and Adam Riess, were fainter than a slowing expansion would have made them. The expansion is accelerating. Dark energy is the name for that unsettled piece of the cosmological model. It is not a glowing material poured between galaxies, and it is not another entry beside gravity, electromagnetism, the strong interaction, and the weak.

Matter gathers. Space expands.

What kind of universe does both?

The same marks, farther apart. An illustration of increasing separation, not a photograph.

Saul Perlmutter, Brian Schmidt, and Adam Riess tell how an assumed error became the finding that the expansion is accelerating. The recording is theirs, from the Nobel Prize in 2011.

07

Simulation hypothesis

Could an experienced world be generated by a computation running at another level of reality? Nick Bostrom’s argument does not say that physicists have found source code. It says that at least one of three claims is true: the human species is very likely to go extinct before a posthuman stage; any posthuman civilization is extremely unlikely to run a significant number of simulations of its evolutionary history; or we are almost certainly living in one.

Computational ontology

Could information, or computation, belong in the fundamental description of reality itself? John Archibald Wheeler’s phrase “it from bit” is a proposal in that neighborhood. It is not a theorem of the Standard Model, and it is not Bostrom’s probability argument under another name.

Computational model

A climate model is a computation about air and ocean. Running it does not turn the weather into a computer. Using calculation to represent nature is ordinary science. It does not decide the other two questions.

If an observer lived entirely inside a computational reality, could a law of nature and a rule of computation be told apart by experiment?

Are We in a Simulation?

Bostrom, Wheeler

Nick Bostrom, “Are You Living in a Computer Simulation?,” Philosophical Quarterly 53, no. 211 (2003): 243-255. John Archibald Wheeler, “Information, Physics, Quantum: The Search for Links,” in Wojciech H. Zurek, ed., Complexity, Entropy, and the Physics of Information (1990). “It from bit” is Wheeler’s proposal. It is not Bostrom’s argument. The three figures are drawings of the relations: a world inside a run, a world made of marks, and a calculation standing beside a world. None of them is a result.

A local rule, repeated, draws a larger triangle. The figure is not stored in any single cell.

Each row is made only from the row above. A cell fills when exactly one of the two cells diagonally above it is filled. No cell contains a triangle. The triangle is the whole.

08

Emergence

The word names a behavior of a whole that is not obvious in the rule for a part. It is not a spell that ends the need to explain. In 1972 Philip Anderson argued, in “More Is Different,” that a new scale can require its own description even when nothing underneath has been repealed.

Could something we call fundamental be emergent?

P. W. Anderson, “More Is Different,” Science 177, no. 4047 (August 4, 1972): 393-396. The triangle beside this note is a toy of a local rule. It is not a model of a force, and it is not in the paper.

10

Consciousness

A force can be written with no one there to notice it. A relation cannot. Something has to hold the two sides in one attention.

Nothing in the rooms above identifies that holding with a particle, a field, or a law.

When is a pattern a figure?

Most of the classical figures are lines of sight. The stars in Orion are not a cluster living beside one another. We project the join. The sky does not.

A set of observations becomes a pattern when someone holds them in one attention. A pattern becomes meaning when someone trusts the holding. The meaning might sit in the cosmos, in consciousness, or in the relation between them.

The same question, asked of the sky itself, is the work of The Constellation. The cipher habit used here was learned in The Book of 42, and the operations have a door of their own at Cipher. Hard quantities of 42, the kind you can measure without choosing a spelling, are kept at The 42 Index. These letter-sums are not that shelf.
